PLEASANTVILLE — A 220-pound black bear romped through school grounds, the Pace University campus and residential Westchester County for several days until he was tranquilized and relocated to rural Putnam County this week, police and wildlife experts said.
The bear was first spotted Friday afternoon at the entrance to Hawthorne County Day School, a facility for children with autism and learning disabilities in Hawthorne, a hamlet about 6 miles north of White Plains, said Jim Horton of Quality Pro Pest & Wildlife Services. Horton, who ultimately shot the dart that tranquilized the bear two days later, was called to the school after first responders chased the bear into a tree.
